Good Review of Ubuntu…at Law.com!!!

Maybe it’s time to consider Linux — or rather a Linux. There are more than a few flavors of this Unix-like open-source operating system in circulation these days (about 300, by one count). One of the commercially backed Linux distributions, Ubuntu, has become something of a darling of the OSS crowd, and it’s well worth a look. There’s a lot to like in the latest version of Ubuntu — and a few things to watch out for from an enterprise perspective.

Legal Technology – Is Ubuntu the Linux OS for Law Firms?

Well, there you go.  Seems even lawyers may yet get on the Linux bandwagon.  And what a bout law schools?  Anyone for a Linux-based lab?   What if law firms start to use more Linux?  Will law schools follow suit?

Clone Hard Drives For Free!

Clonezilla, based on DRBL, Partition Image, ntfsclone, and udpcast, allows you can massively clone many (40 plus!) computers simultaneously. Unlike G4U (Ghost for Unix) or G4L (Ghost for Linux),
Clonezilla saves and restores only used blocks in the harddisk. This
increases the clone effiency. At the NCHC’s Classroom C, Clonezilla was
used to clone 41 computers simultaneously. It took about 50 minutes to
clone a 5.6 GBytes system image to all 41 computers via unicasting and
only about 10 minutes via multicasting!

Microsoft Betas Window Sharing Tool

Microsoft is beta testing a new tool called SharedView that enables colleagues to share documents or demonstrate an application over a network or the Internet. Up to 15 people can join a SharedView session, although only one application can be shared at a time – not a full desktop.
WebEx and other services don’t need to be scared just yet, however, as the service does not offer true collaboration – individuals must request control from the person who initiated the session. Users can still participate without control as each has a special pointer that can be used to highlight and discuss areas of the screen. SharedView requires Internet Explorer and a Windows Live ID.

Sounds pretty useful when combined with IM or teleconference to demo a new program or do a quick howto. I’ll be checking it out.
